The team advances scholarly and innovative approaches to Indigenous engagement in teaching, learning, curriculum and educational technology practices within the UBC teaching and learning community and across UBC’s diverse disciplinary and cultural contexts.
We provide workshops, consultations, and educational resource development focused on supporting and educating the UBC teaching and learning community on Indigenous engagement topics, such as Indigenous experiences in the classroom, designing courses and content with Indigenous topics, and supporting TA’s with Indigenous focused training.

Indigenous Initiatives at the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology (CTLT) and the Equity and Inclusion Office (EIO) are hiring a Graduate Student Facilitator (CCEI-GSF) to support the design and delivery of learning sessions for the Classroom Climate and Equity and Inclusion (CCEI) TA Training Program.
This collaborative initiative is led by staff members from CTLT Indigenous Initiatives and the Equity and Inclusion Office’s (EIO) Strategic Partnerships and Capacity Building (SPCB) teams. The CCEI TA training program offers workshops for new and returning Teaching Assistants (TAs) across UBC Faculties and departments to help new and returning TAs build equitable, inclusive teaching practices and deepen their understanding of classroom climate, with a particular focus on Indigenous perspectives, contexts, and experiences. The GSF will work closely with the CCEI team to design and facilitate training activities that strengthens TAs’ capacity to support diverse learners, including Indigenous and historically, persistently, systemically marginalized (HSPM) students.
This position is based within the CTLT Indigenous Initiatives team and will collaborate closely with the EIO and other project stakeholders. The CCEI-GSF will develop and refine learning activities within workshops and support the delivery workshops focusing on strategies to support TA learning about classroom climate, Indigenous and equity-related topics, and inclusive teaching. This role is ideal for a graduate student with knowledge of Indigenous experiences, an interest in decolonizing education, and experience or interest in workshop facilitation.
- Note: This role is paid hourly with increases and decreases in hours based on workshop demands.Successful candidates may expect a minimum of 5 hours of work per week, but during peak workshop times (first 3 weeks of September and January), hours may increase to 10 hours per week. The ideal candidate will be able to support workshop facilitation and delivery during peak education delivery times (typically September-October and January – February)
Job Duties and Reporting:
The CCEI-GSF will work independently under the direction of SPCB Equity Education Strategist and/or Senior Educational Consultant, Indigenous Initiatives, to support members of the CCEI project team consisting of GSFs, CTLT and EIO staff. This role is expected to work collaboratively with the other CCEI-GSFs hired within the project and may collaborate with colleagues on various tasks.
Duties include:
- Co-facilitates workshops for new and returning TAs in collaboration with other Graduate StudentFacilitators (GSFs)
- Updates, duplicates and maintains educational components delivered through online learning management system(s) including Canvas asynchronous learning requirements that precedes synchronous workshop delivery
- Contributes to the development of learning activities aligned with established learning objectives, supporting TAs respectful engagement on Indigenous topics and equity-related issues in and out of the classroom.
- Manages workshop resources and activity supplies to ensure workshops are engaging and well resourced
- Supports senior CCEI-GSFs with day-of workshop preparation and logistics to ensure all facilitation and workshop delivery materials are brought to in-person or synchronous sessions
- Supports implementation of evaluation tools to gather participant feedback and applies insights to continually improve workshop facilitation and delivery.
- Leads the evaluation, feedback and reporting on the number of workshops and participants, as well as key finding from participant feedback to ensure all program metrics are being met
- Prepares and (co-) delivers presentations on learning activities and facilitation developments and implementation plans
- Drafts and refines facilitation updates through blog posts and reports•Provides GSF team coverage (i.e., administration back-up) as needed
- Attends CCEI project team meetings, providing updates, contributing to discussions and the direction of the CCEI TA training program where appropriate and implements next steps when designing and delivering unit-specific workshops
- Contributes to reporting in a timely manner, ensuring CTLT Indigenous Initiatives and EIO have up-to-date program metrics under sometimes strict timelines
- Meets regularly with Senior Educational Consultant Indigenous Initiatives, CTLT and Equity EducationStrategist, SPCB team EIO to ensure project goals are met and ongoing developments are discussed at regular intervals
- Support the project team to develop train-the-trainer program and materials for onboarding future CCEI-GSFs
- Additional duties as assigned to ensure the success of the Classroom Climate and Equity and Inclusion(CCEI) TA Training
Qualifications:
- Enrolled in a UBC graduate program, preferably in a field related to Indigenous studies
- Knowledge about settler-colonialism in Canada, as well as First Nations and Indigenous histories, politics, cultural studies, law, social issues, and/or education is required
- Experience with group facilitation, leading discussions, and/or working as a Teaching Assistant
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
- Excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to lead others and function as an effective team member
- Demonstrated ability to liaise with multiple stakeholders and project partners (students, staff, faculty, alumni, community members, etc.)
- Ability to prioritize, work, and problem-solve independently and under pressure
- Proficient with computer software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, or equivalent
